Originally built by two partners in the early 1960s, Marineland Melanesia has been proudly owned and operated by the Craig family since 1971. From working in Papua New Guinea, family patriarch George Craig (perhaps one of the original ‘crocodile hunters’) set about bringing to reality an island habitat for huge crocodiles and a magnificent range of carvings and ancient primitive tribal art from the region known as Melanesia.
Cassius – World’s Largest Crocodile in Captivity
Until his passing in October 2024 at an estimated age of 110 years, Marineland Melanesia was home to Cassius, the world’s largest crocodile in captivity. Cassius had called Green Island’s Marineland Melanesia home since 1987 when relocated from Australia’s Northern Territory. At 5.48 metres long (17ft 11.75inches) he was a reputed man-eater!
